Excess Hanging Skin

Unfortunately, this weight loss usually leaves patients with significant amount of excess hanging skin all over their body. This can cause physical and mental stress which undermine the achievement of losing the weight. Physically, these folds of skin can interfere with clothing, limit mobility or cause friction and infection. Mentally, patients suffer the stress of unattractive body image and may get frustrated after what they have achieved by losing weight.

The main areas affected by excess skin are:
Face and neck
Arms
Breasts
Abdomen and waist
Buttocks
Thighs

Each of these areas need a special experience to deal with its problems. In most cases, traditional cosmetic surgery procedures might not be suitable in these cases. ASET Hospital’s team of experienced plastic surgeons have a special interest in dealing with post-bariatric cosmetic surgery procedures.

Face & Neck

essential alterations to MACS lift are essential to achieve the aims of surgery which include removal of excess skin through well-hidden scar, lifting the SMAS (layer under skin) and paying special attention to submental area (under chin) where maximum skin laxity exists. y.

Arms

Arms: ASET surgeons would advise you regarding the options of short-scar vs long-scar arm lift with or without Triplex laser liposuction technology. Aims are to remove the excess skin (Bingo wings) through least scarring with minimal surgical risks.

Breast

Breasts: Post bariatric patients unfortunately lose most of the volume of their breasts with obvious hanging droopy breasts. In women, they end with severe degree of breast ptosis (droopy breast) with nearly empty breasts. ASET surgeons would discuss the option of “Auto-augmentation” versus standard breast uplift techniques with or without breast implants. The aim of each techniques is removal of maximum amount of unwanted excess skin while breast implant may be needed to restore the lost breast volume.

In men, ASET surgeons would discuss removal of excess skin with or without liposuction of stubborn pockets of fat through modified scar to allow lifting the droopy nipples to their normal level. In some patients (women and men), they may need upper body lift at the same time to remove excess hanging skin folds in the armpits and back at the same time as their breast surgery. This type of surgery needs good planning and execution to achieve the desired cosmetic surgery results.

Abdomen and Waist

Abdomen and waist: wide range of procedures are available. The optimal option would depend on the amount of excess skin and the aim of surgery.

Standard abdominoplasty: (tummy tuck) with or without liposuction

Apronectomy: a simple form of tummy tuck when only the hanging apron of excess skin is removed.

Fleur de Lys abdominoplasty: this form of abdominoplasty is useful in cases when there is excess skin in both the vertical and transverse directions in the tummy

Lower body lift. This can be with standard abdominoplasty or with Fleur de Lys

Pubic lift: the pubic area is one of the areas which drop down and shows excess skin after losing weight. A pubic lift or “pubic hitch” can address this problem by removing the excess skin and lift the area. This procedure can be done alone or more commonly as part of the abdominoplasty procedure.

Buttocks

Buttock lift: this procedure aims to remove the excess skin from the area and lift the buttock to create the natural look round buttocks. This procedure can be done alone or more commonly as part of the lower body lift procedure.

Thighs

Thigh lift or thigh reduction: lifting and removal of hanging skin from the inner thighs can be achieved through a well-hidden scar placed in the groin crease. However, most of patients with excess skin after losing significant amount of weight would need “thigh reduction” to reduce the circumference of their thighs too. This would result in an additional vertical scar along the inner side of the thigh. The length of that scar would depend on how much excess skin needs to be removed. However, the introduction of Liposuction-Assisted Thigh Reduction has led to much shorted scars with this procedure. In addition, ASET Hospital adopt using the Triplex laser liposuction in such cases to shorten the scar even more.

Staged Procedures

Post bariatric patients may need multiple procedures over a length of time. Your surgeon would discuss with you the available options for your case. The sequence and/or combination of procedures would also be discussed. There are few factors which influence that decision. All these factors would be considered between patient and surgeon. The top priority in these circumstances is patient safety. Your surgeon would explain the safest sequence/combination after taking in consideration the patients’ wishes and concerns regarding which anatomical areas patients would like to address first based on which area concerns them more.

ASET Hospital provides you with the most advanced technology and most experienced plastic surgeons to address your concerns.
