Reintroduce strength and structure

Following childbirth or as a result of ageing, it is very common for the pelvic muscles and tissue to loosen and weaken. Vaginoplasty is a cosmetic procedure designed to reintroduce strength and structure around the area. ASET Hospital is proud to have on board one of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons in vaginoplasty, Miss Rieka Taghizadeh.

What is vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation procedure designed to reconstruct the vagina, rebuilding the pelvic floor. At this time, we are unable to offer gender confirmation surgery.

Who is suitable for vaginoplasty?

Generally, we treat women who have noticed laxity in the vaginal muscles following childbirth or as a result of the ageing process.

It is an extremely common area of concern amongst women and most of the patients we treat for this indication are looking to rejuvenate the area and improve their self-confidence.

We usually ask that patients stop drinking and smoking, or taking aspirin, for at least 4 weeks ahead of surgery, as this can prolong the healing process.

What happens during and after a vaginoplasty procedure?

Vaginoplasty is treated as a day case, meaning you will be discharged on the same day and will be able to return home after the procedure.

In total, the surgery usually takes between 1-2 hours and we usually use general anaesthetic.

During the procedure, the surgeon will bring together the weakened or stretched muscles at the back of the vagina. The muscle is then stitched together using dissolvable sutures, before any excess vaginal muscle or tissue is removed.

Following the procedure, patients should notice the muscle feels tighter, similar to how it felt pre-childbirth or when they were younger. The procedure can also improve female pleasure during sexual intercourse and help improve body confidence.

What types of incisions are made?

The incision is made inside the vagina, to trim any excess tissue and to create a tighter vaginal muscle.

Is there any downtime after vaginoplasty?

With any form of surgery there is downtime. While during the procedure itself you will be sedated, you will likely feel sore in the treated area for a few days after the procedure. We often provide pain relief medication to our patients to help manage the soreness.

Swelling may persist for up to two weeks, but should subside after a fortnight. You will receive a follow-up appointment with your plastic surgeon at this point, to ensure you are healing correctly and to check the results.

It is advisable to avoid sexual intercourse and strenuous activity until you are fully healed, which can take up to six weeks.

We offer all our patients round-the-clock medical support, with a 24-hour helpline available. Our trained, experience team will guide you and answer any questions you may have, as well as provide an aftercare package for you.

Will I have scars?

The incision is made inside the vagina, to trim any excess tissue and to create a tighter vaginal muscle.

What are the risks and possible side effects?

As with any surgical procedure, there are side effects and possible risks associated with vaginoplasty. They include soreness and swelling, mild discomfort and bruising. In some cases, spot bleeding and infection can occur.

Should you experience any abnormal side effects post-surgery, our team will assist you and make sure the area is healing.

Your consultation at ASET Hospital

At ASET Hospital we carry out thorough consultations ahead of any surgical procedure.

Not only does it allow both the patient and the surgeon to go through what’s involved during the procedure, it allows us a chance to get to know you and your motivation for surgery.

It’s important for us to go through your medical history in detail to ensure surgery is the most suitable option for you.
